Aigrette--tuft of feathers, usually stiff, used as hat ornament; originally from egrets. Balibuntl--a very fine weave of straw, from the buri palm. Bandeau--a headband type wrap, or a band in back of hats used to secure hat to the head, usually seen with shallow crowned hats or hats which perch atop the head. Beret--soft, round, brimless hat associated with the French generally, and artists specifically. Bespoke Shop--a shop making and selling one-of-a-kind items. Block--wooden form used to shape the hat; act of shaping felt or straw with steam. Boater--hat with flattened crown and flat brim, usually straw; also known as a sailor; inspired by French sailors. Breton--round-crowned hat with an upturned brim; a hat inspired by French sailors. Capeline--a wide brimmed, unblocked shape of straw or felt from which pamelas, cartwheels, or picture hats will be blocked. Cartwheel--a very wide brimmed hat. Catherinettes--unmarried women, over the age of 25, who worked in the French millinery trade; Nov. 25 is La Fete de Catherine. Cloche--French for 'bell'; a hat that fits close to the head and usually pulled down to the eyebrows. Cockade--a ribbon ornament, usually pleated in some fashion. Cone--a brimless, unblocked shape of felt or straw from which crowns, cloches, toques, and fez will be blocked. Doll Hat--a tiny hat worn perched, to the front of the head and usually cocked, normally secured with a bandeau or an elastic. Fez--a brimless, high crowned hat associated with Arabia. Halo Hat--wide brimmed, crownless hat. Horsehair--very open woven braid originally from the mane or tail of horses; now made of synthetic; can be quite wide. Illusion--a netting used as ornament for hats; finest woven of the nets; usually used in bridal veils. Juliet Cap--a closely worn, cutaway hat favored by brides, mostly with a veil attached. Leghorn--fine Italian straw Milliner--one who makes, designs or sells women's hats; originally 'Milaner', a native of Milan, Italy. Modiste--French for milliner Parisisol--linen weave straw Pamela--wide brimed hat which droops in front and back, usually with a shallow crown. Passementerie--fine ornamental trim of lace, beading, braid, for a hat. Petersham--a saw-toothed ribbon, similar to grosgrain, used as the sweatband inside hats. Pillbox--a small brimless hat worn perched on top of the head; Jackie Kennedy made these famous. Ruching--ruffled ribbon used as hat trim. Snood--a heavy net used to cover and secure the hair, usually worn at the nape of the neck. Toque--a closely worn hat, similar to a cloche, with a very short brim. Tulle--a netting used as ornament or understructure; not as finely woven as illusion, but finer than net. |
